Calshot Spit
Famous mile-long sand-and-shingle spit on the southern bank of Southampton Water. Works in essentially any wind direction because of the spit’s shape; NE/E give cross-to-cross-onshore at the front of the spit, and the summer SW sea breeze gets funnelled down the Solent reliably. Shallow sandbar on the Solent side at low tide creates a big butter-flat lagoon (ideal for learning). Watch for strong tidal flow around the spit. School: Calshot Activities Centre (council watersports centre).
